Nakuru town will on Wednesday be granted city status by President Uhuru Kenyatta, becoming the fourth metropolis in Kenya.
The town will join Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu to be designated as cities in the country.
The announcement was made by President Kenyatta, during the State of the Nation address at Parliament buildings on Thursday.
“I will tomorrow have the high privilege of conferring to Nakuru Municipality the City Status. This is as a result of devolution and with its reputation as East Africa's cleanest town, all of Kenya looks forward to Nakuru city,” the Head of State said in his address on Tuesday.
Nakuru was endorsed for city status on June 3, 2018, following the Senate’s decision to scale up its municipality status. 38 senators voted to have the city's status conferred whereas two opposed.
