MCK board hands CEO Omwoyo new 5-year term

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) board has handed chief executive officer (CEO) David Omwoyo a new 5-year term.

This now means  Mr Omwoyo who was appointed in 2017 will serve until July, 2027 when his second and final term will end.

MCK board Chair Maina Muiruri said the renewal of the CEO’s term, which was to end in July 2022, comes after a performance evaluation by the Board supervised by the State Corporations Advisory Committe further, the contract extension has been made in accordance with SCAC guidelines which require that a decision on the CEO’s contract should be made at least six months to the expiry of the current term to allow for smooth transition.

“The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) board has renewed the term of the CEO Mr David Omwoyo as the Chief Executive Officer for a second and final term, until July 2027,” said Mr Muiruri in a statement to newsrooms on Sunday.

Mr Muiruri added that the decision to hand Mr Omwoyo another term was endorsed due to his stellar leadership of the organisation.

He pointed out that even though the evaluation pass mark for CEOs serving in State Corporations is 70 percent, Mr Omwoyo scored an impressive 96 per cent.

“The board is exceptionally impressed by the performance of the CEO in the last four years and his thinking around strategic interventions in media regulation in a changing environment,” he said.

“The board noted the turnaround at the council, including opening of four regional offices and improving the financial position of the Council is excellent,” added the chairman.

Some of the achievements at MCK attributed to the leadership of Mr Omwoyo include enhancing collaborative participation of sector players in media development matters.

Prior to joining the MCK, he was the Managing Director of Waumini Communications and Communications Director for the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops for six years.
