Kakamega High School was on Saturday closed indefinitely after a dawn fire razed down two dormitories that house over 580 students.
The school principal Gerald Orina confirmed the closure after a mid-morning deliberations with the school board.
According to reports the fire broke out at around 5:30 am while students were in class for there morning preps.
The cause of the fire is yet go be established with Kakamega County Police Commander Hassan Barua confirming that at least 16 students are being held in connection with the fire incident.
