Husband of slain athlete Agnes Tirop arrested in Mombasa

The husband of the former World cross country champion Agnes Tirop who was found murdered has been arrested.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Tirop's husband Ibrahim Rotich who is the prime suspect in the murder was arrested on Thursday evening in Changamwe, Mombasa County, and is expected to be arraigned in court.

“The prime suspect in the gruesome murder of 25-year old world 5000m record holder Tirop, has been arrested. Ibrahim Rotich who was in a relationship with the athlete was arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa County as he tried to flee to a neighboring country to evade justice,” read a statement from DCI.

“The suspect is currently being grilled by detectives at Changamwe Police Station for more details into the murder, before being arraigned court to answer to murder charges.” the statement added.

The family of the slain athlete revealed that the olympian was in a troubled marriage with the suspect before here untimely death.

Tirop 25, lifeless body with stab wounds  was found at her house in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

On Thursday, Athletics Kenya suspended all athletics-related events for two weeks in honor of the fallen 10 km World record holder.
