3 killed, 7 injured in Bali earthquake

An earthquake struck the Indonesian tourist island Bali on Saturday, killing 3 people and injuring 7 others.

The earthquake, which was of a 4.8 magnitude, struck at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres (six miles) northeast of the town of Banjar Wanasari.

According to officials, two people died when the quake triggered a landslide that buried their house in Bangli regency while another person was killed in the port town of Karangasem.

They also said the death toll was not expected to rise.

Disaster agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said,
"The quake was felt strongly for five seconds.”

“People were panicking and ran from their houses when the quake hit,” he added.

The epicentre of the tremor was far from the main tourist hub in Bali, which is slowly reopening to international visitors after the Covid-19 pandemic shutdown.

Indonesia's position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” causes it to experience frequent quakes. The “Ring of Fire” is an arc of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates collide that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

A 6.2-magnitude quake that struck Sulawesi Island in January killed over 100 people and left thousands homeless.

Buildings were reduced to a tangled mass of twisted metal and chunks of concrete in the seaside city of Mamuju.

Three years ago, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu left over 4,300 people dead or missing.
