Murang’a County to give dairy company to farmers Sacco

Murang’a County is highly likely to hand over Murang’a County Creameries to the county farmers.

According to a proposal on the matter, the county government will control 10 per cent of shares.

Dairy cooperatives will be the majority shareholder of the factory which is Governor Mwangi wa Iria's brain child.

According to the governor, the milk value chain will be protected by the Murang’a County Dairy Act from sabotage. This will be beneficial for the 350,000 farmers.

He noted the last seven years, the price of milk has been Sh35 per litre after negotiations with the processors, leading to farmers earning in excess of Sh1 billion annually.

“Today (September 1), the price of milk to the producer is Sh40 up from Sh35 and the payment will be effected on the fifth of every month without failure,” Iria said addressing officials of the 35 dairy cooperatives in Murang’a town.

The governor added that animal feeds processing plant will be completed in December  and regulations will bar the incoming governor from sabotaging the milk processing plant which has been earning the farmers Sh100 million per month.
