Opposition leader Raila Odinga has ruled out possibilities of challenging the appellate court's decision on the Building Bridges Initiative case should the court uphold the High Court ruling noting his focus is now on the 2022 elections.
The ODM leader who was speaking in an interview with Radio Nam Lolwe said he will respect the court's ruling and that he together with his handshake partner President Uhuru Kenyatta will instead chat a new path of winning the 2022 election and forming the next government.
“If the courts rule otherwise, it is not the end of the road. We will keep BBI in a certain envelope and go on and take over government first in 2022. After that, we shall go back to BBI because there is a lot that our people want to be changed in the Constitution,” said Mr Odinga.
“We do not want to waste any more time by going to the Supreme Court. We will now concentrate fully on elections. After clinching power, then we will go for BBI.”
Raila's interview comes just two days to the seven-judge bench ruling on the case, the bench led by Court of Appeal President Daniel Musinga will deliver its ruling on an open court restricted to only 16 lawyers due to the Covid-19 restriction on Friday, August 20.
The opposition chief who has remained mum if he will contest for presidency further ruled out any possibilities of using Parliament to enact some of the reforms the initiative was championing for especially amendments that do not need a referendum.
The BBI appeal was filed by Odinga, President Kenyatta, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) and the BBI Secretariat following a High Court ruling that declared the constitutional amendment invalid, null, and void citing numerous irregularities.
