Uganda rewards top athletes with cars

Three Ugandans who won medals at the just concluded Tokyo Olympic Games have been rewarded with cars with the Ugandan government pledging to pay them a monthly salary and also building houses for their parents.


President Yoweri Museveni made the announcement yesterday after meeting with all athletes who participated in the Olympics.

According to President Museveni, every athlete who wins a medal at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and any other continental games would earn a monthly salary of Ush 5 million for Gold, Ush 3 million for Silver, and Ush 1million for bronze.

"I made an order in 2013 that anybody who wins gold at a continental level, commonwealth or Olympics should be paid USh5m per month all the time and USh1 million for silver and bronze. It was not honored...I was told they are being paid quarterly."

"I didn't say quarterly. I speak English very well. All their arrears will be paid. ...what they should have been paid. And because I'm now a happy man. I will give each of these medallists a car. I will build for their parents a house each," Mr Museveni said

Uganda got two gold medals, a silver and a bronze in Tokyo.


Joshua Cheptegei, world record holder of the 5000m bagged a gold medal and a silver for the 10,000 m.


Perth Chemutai became Uganda's first female athlete to win a gold medal in the Olympics.
