KMA: Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers should get Covid-19 vaccines

The Kenya Medical Association (KMA) has urged pregnant and breastfeeding women to get the Covid-19 vaccines, stating that the benefits outweigh the risks.

The association's advisory was in response to an increase in Covid-19 infections linked to the delta variant.

According to data on the disease, pregnant women are more likely to have severe Covid disease, including an increased risk of ICU admission and death, especially in the third trimester of pregnancy, KMA explained.

The association added that compared to pregnant women without Covid-19, those infected are more likely to experience still birth and preterm birth

“Pregnant women with underlying medical conditions are at a higher risk of severe illness,” reads the statement from KMA.

KMA urged the Ministry of Education to collaborate with the Ministry of Health to strictly enforce the implementation of Covid 19 management protocols in schools, noting that the rising number of infections in Kenyan schools is a major concern.

The association stated, “Rising infections have led to school closures, absenteeism and a general state of anxiety in the education sector.”

It also urged Kenyans to follow Covid-19 protocols, especially now that passenger services have resumed full operations, asserting that all public rallies should be deferred until Kenya achieves a population vaccination rate of at least 60%.
