Pope Francis is doing well after undergoing specialized surgery for colon diverticulitis on Sunday, the Vatican has said.
"The Holy Father reacted well to the surgery carried out under general anesthesia, "Holy See spokesperson Matteo Bruni said in a written statement.
The statement released on Sunday however didn't delve much into the pontiff's condition after the surgery.
The 84-year-old Francis was admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital early Sunday after conducting traditional Sunday Angelus prayer in St Peter's Square.
He is expected to convalesce for seven days.
Diverticulitis is an inflammation caused when people develop pouches in the wall of the colon it's usually symptomless but often causes discomfort and bleeding.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella led the nation in wishing the pontiff a speedy recovery.
It was the first time Francis has been hospitalized since his election as Pope in 2013.
