Thirteen people died while siphoning fuel after a petrol tanker overturned and exploded in Malanga on the Kisumu-Busia Highway.
A dozen other people were injured after the fire broke out from the tanker that got involved in an accident near Argwings Kodhek Secondary School on Saturday night.
Those injured were rushed to Yala Sub-county hospital in Gem, Siaya County.
According to Gem OCPD Mosea Chacha, the fire broke out when one member of the public opened the tanker compartment to allow siphoning of petrol.
The police boss said the accident occurred after a trailer ferrying milk from Busia heading to Kisumu veered off the road to avoid head-on collision with tanker that was heading towards Busia.
" It was at this point when the petrol tanker hit another oncoming vehicle head on." he said.
It took three hours to contain the fire with the help of firefighters from Busia County, according to the OCPD
