Inside Kenya's Sh 3.6 trillion 2021/22 budget

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani today afternoon presented Sh 3.6 trillion budget, the second budget since the coronavirus outbreak and the most expensive in the history of Kenya.

During his budget presentation, Yatani assured the public of the sustainability of the country's debt as even the country seeks to borrow sh 1.6 trillion to address the deficit in the budget.

In his highlights; the government as exempted Value Added Tax on imports used in the manufacture of ventilators, food supplements and laboratory reagents.

Equipment used in generating of solar energy have also been exempted from VAT.

However, traders importing electronics products will have to part with more cash as they will now have to remit Digital Service Tax.

In the 2021/22 financial year, the Ministry of Education has been allocated Sh 202.8 billion, sh112 billion had been channelled to the free primary education programme while Sh 62.6 billion has been allocated towards free secondary education.

The ICT ministry has been allocated sh 20.9 billion while the Sports and Arts Ministry has been allocated Sh 15 billion.

Counties have been allocated sh 370 billion while Parliament has been allocated Sh 37.9 billion with the Judiciary been given sh 17.9 billion.

The health ministry have an allocation of sh 121.1 billion with Universal Health Care receiving sh 47 billion, sh 8.7 billion being allocated to Covid-19 emergency response, HIV has been allocated sh 5.8 billion and Sh 14.3 billion for Covid-19 vaccine.
