Rosemary Odinga, Raila Odinga's daughter, has urged young people to contribute towards fighting climate change by planting trees in their compounds.
According to Rosemary, tree planting should be a priority for young people because they are the ones who will be greatly affected by climate change in the future.
As the technical adviser to the Ministry of Gender and Public Service, Rosemary pointed out that
environmental degradation is a major cause of adverse climate change, adding that sufficient forest cover can help in minigating its effects.
Speaking at Ngong' Forest reserve on Saturday, Rosemary said, “I urge you my fellow youth to take up this opportunity positively and be part of our journey of making the country green.”
The ODM Party leader's daughter joined various government officials and young people in planting 1,600 trees, an initiative that is part of the Kenya Forest Services to restore forest cover to achieve 10 per cent forest cover.
The Kenya Forest Service reported that in 2010,
Kenya’s forest cover was 6.99 per cent.
In a bid to encourage young people to plant trees, the service has donated 10,000 seedlings to each the 47 counties.
Chairperson of Kenya Universities Students Organization Anthony Manyara asked his fellow students to delve into tree planting and make it a commercial initiative.
Manyara said, “As an architect. I can tell the importance of trees, ranging from building to manufacturing papers. When you cut one tree, ensure you replace it with at least two others.”
