Nyakach residents raise concern over rising sexual assault cases

Residents of Nyakach have raised concern over the rampant cases of sexual attacks that seem to be coordinated to target widows and women-led households.

Kisumu Medical Trust (KMET) has revealed that in the past month, 11 cases of defilement/rape have been recorded and the perpetrators seem to have a particular pattern of attacking the victims.

According to Victone Ochieng’, who documents the cases in the area, the perpetrators usually break in between 2 and 4 am with a bright torch and a knife, shows the victims that they know their movements in detail, rapes them and threatens them before walking away with their mobile phones to hamper communication.

In February, man who held three sisters aged 14,16 and 17 hostage using a knife for hours raped them repeatedly in their grandmother’s house.

Agoro West chief Elizabeth Atieno said that despite efforts to rally the survivors to report such cases, no arrests have been made which in turn shows the slowness in the dispensation of justice.

According to advocacy and policy lead at KMET,
Patricia Nudi, ensuring justice for the survivors will need the collaboration of players within the SGBV sphere for capacity building and assistance from the police regarding evidence collection to build a watertight case.

She added that there should be a gender desk at police stations across Nyakach to ease assistance for sexual gender based violence victims.

In Mid March this year, a 27 year old widow, the eldest of the documented cases, repeatedly defiled at knife point alongside her 14-year -old sister. The youngest case is a 4 year old .
