IPOA begins probe into death of two men found in Thika River after police arrest

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has began investigations into the suspected murder of two men whose bodies were found in Thika River after police reportedly by police.

The deceased, 15-year-old Nicholas Maithya and 18-year-old Asman Kamau, had been arrested by police officers and the assistant chief of Rubiru village in Gatanga for participating in rampant brewing of illicit liquor along the river.

According to eyewitnesses, police assaulted the two young men, handcuffed them together and pushed them into the river in Rubiru village, Murang’a County.

Although police have denied any involvement in their deaths, the residents said one body was retrieved with handcuffs and the other had handcuff marks.

IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori said, “In line with its mandate, IPOA took up the matter for investigations as it seeks to establish what exactly transpired and if the police were involved as alleged by the witness accounts. The investigations are ongoing.”
