Giggs to stand trial for assault in 2022

Former Manchester United football player and Wales national team manager Ryan Giggs, who is accused of headbutting his ex-girlfriend intentionally and having controlling behaviour, will stand trial on January 24, 2022.

However, Giggs has pleaded not guilty and he must attend a plea and trial preparation hearing scheduled for July 23. Until then, he will remain on conditional bail.

The prosecution is expected to present the particulars of the coercive and controlling behaviour charge by July 9.

The 47-year-old faces two other charges common assault of her younger sister Emma and
causing actual bodily harm to ex-girlfriend Kate Greville.

In the presence of his lawyers, Giggs attended the 15-minute long preparation hearing before Judge Nicholas Dean at Manchester Crown Court on Friday.

According to the judge, the set trial date was the best that could be done in the circumstances even though the date is so far in the future.

In April, when a magistrates court heard a prosecutor read out a summary of charges including that he headbutted Kate Greville deliberately, the former Manchester United winger was charged.

Arguing that Giggs had subjected his partner to “degrading treatment” and isolation from friends and colleagues, the prosecution stated, “There was fear of violence on many occasions.”

Giggs, who was first arrested in the case and released on bail in November, has been replaced as Wales manager for this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament.

In his 23 years as a Manchester United player,
Giggs made 963 appearances and established a club record by winning a haul of honours including 13 Premier League winner’s medals and two UEFA Champions League winner’s medals.

He took over Wales' national coach in 2018 after representing the team as a player 64 times between 1991 and 2007.
