Five robbers were shot dead on Tuesday afternoon by Kakamega County police officers after a high-speed chase on the Kakamega-Kisumu highway.
According to reports, the robbers who the police officers were in pursuit of were a notorious gang responsible for rampant criminal activities in the county.
Kakamega South Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Chesire confirmed the incident, saying that the police were forced to shot at the robbers as the latter engaged fire with them.
Chesire said, “The police challenged them to surrender but instead the (robbers) fired at them. All robbers were armed.”
Police retrieved two pistols, a police uniform, several rounds of ammunition, several mobile phones, a radio device, and a bank cheque in the Toyota Belta used by the robbers.
The county police boss warned criminal gangs within the county, asserting that they will soon be caught.
