The Senate was on Wednesday forced to momentarily suspend its afternoon special sitting after reports emerged that Meru Senator Mithika Linturi had been arrested ahead of a debate on the Building Bridges Initiative ( BBI)Bill.
The report on the alleged arrest was brought to the attention of the house by Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot who said he had received a call from the Senator who told him he had been arrested by officers who were driving him to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters.
" I have received a distress a call from one of our colleagues, Senator Mithika Linturi. This afternoon while he was driving to Parliament, he was stopped by gentlemen who claimed to be police officers from DCI," stated Senator Cheruiyot
"They asked him to alight from his car and he is now in a car headed to DCI headquarters and he does not understand what his crime is," he added.
Other Senators led by Minority Leader James Orengo weighed in on the alleged arrest of Senator Linturi demanding the speaker's indulgence.
This forced Speaker Kenneth Lusaka to adjourn the session for 30 minutes to Inquire about the circumstances that led to the Senator's arrest in order to bring order to the house.
" This is a very serious matter and because of its gravity, I am suspending the house for 30 minutes during which i will use the time to find the Senator's whereabouts, "
Its however not clear whether Senator Linturi's arrest was in connection with the BBI debate.
