Dr Peter Mathuki has officially taken over as the Secretary-General of the East African Community ( EAC) replacing Burundi's Liberat Mfumukeko whose term lapsed this year.
Mathuki a former Member of the East Africa Legislative Assembly is the sixth EAC Secretary-General and the second Kenyan after Francis Muthaura who served between 1996-2001 to hold the post.
He would serve for a five-year non-renewable term.
Among his first assignments, will include steering the member states through the Covid-19 pandemic, address finance challenges amid the regional body's plan to Implement development and routine operations and also conflict between member states.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is one latest nation that has expressed interest in joining EAC which is made up of Kenya, Tanzania , Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan.
