Six newly elected ICC judges sworn in

The six newly elected judges of the International Criminal  Court (ICC) have been sworn in.

They are Joanna Korner (United Kingdom), Gocha Lordkipanidze ( US) María del Socorro Flores Liera (Mexico), Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godinez (Costa Rica), Miatta Maria Samba (Sierra Leone) and Althea Violet Alexis-Windsor (Trinidad and Tobago).

Each judge vowed, "I solemnly undertake that I will perform my duties and exercise my powers as a judge of the International Criminal Court honourably, faithfully, impartially and conscientiously, and that I will respect the confidentiality of investigations and prosecutions and the secrecy of deliberations."

Five judges were present in court room one while the other was sworn in virtually due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The judges will serve for nine years during the nineteenth session of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute.

Karim Khan was elected by the ICC last month as the new prosecutor for a nine-year term which will commence on June 16.

He garnered 72 votes in a secret ballot against three other candidates, thereby surpassing the 62 votes needed for him to win.

Khan was the lead lawyer of Deputy President William Ruto at the ICC. He also represented former Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura.
