COVID-19 cases in India exceed 12 million

As of Monday 29, 2021, COVID-19 cases in India have spiked to 12 million since October, which is noteworthy because this is the first time for the country to experience a major surge in a single day.

In the last 24 hours, the health ministry reported
a total of 68,020 new coronavirus cases, the highest daily rise since October 11, 2020.

India’s overall caseload of 12.04 million is the world’s biggest outside the United States and Brazil.

Since a peak in late September, the country's caseload had been falling steadily. However, a surge was instigated by increased public gatherings and travel.

A majority of Indians are yet to be vaccinated. For three consecutive days India has been reporting a spike in cases above the 60,000 mark.

Monday’s rise was still below September’s peak of more than 90,000 cases a day.

Maharashtra is the country's worst affected state
and a strict lockdown is likely to be imposed in the area this week.

Travel restrictions have been tightened further and night curfew has been imposed in the area to help in curbing the spread of the virus.

On Monday, COVID-19 fatalities rose by 291 and the cumulative fatalities in India now stand at 161,843.
