Class six pupil murders teacher following an altercation over water

A 16-year-old Class Six pupil from Shihuli Primary school has been arrested for allegedly murdering his teacher at Shihuli village in Shinyalu, Kakamega County following an altercation over water.

The deceased was identified as Maurice Khataka. He was a 47-year-old P1 Teacher at Ihondolo Primary School and the immediate neighbour to the suspect.

Khataka's wife Everlyne Muhenje stated that the pupil went to their home in the morning to fetch water from their well but Khataka denied him access and an altercation between them ensued.

She claimed, “When my husband declined to permit the suspect to fetch water from our well, he forcibly tried to gain entry but he was overpowered. He then picked stones and hurled them at my husband and ran away.”

According to Muhenje, the deceased fell unconscious after hecwas hit by stones on the left side of the head.

He was then rushed to St Elizabeth Mukumu hospital where he was admitted for specialised treatment and was later referred to the Kakamega County Teaching and Referral hospital.

Muhenje was quite emotional when disclosing that the husband died while receiving treatment at the referral hospital.

Area Chief Gerald Murunga confirmed the incident saying “It’s very unfortunate that a life had to be cut short after a quarrel over water. This is a heinous act and we have lost a brilliant teacher, a husband and a father. The law will take its course notwithstanding the age of the suspect.”

According to Kakamega East Sub County Police Commander Robert Makau, the pupil has been arrested and is in their custody awaiting prosecution.

Before his arraignment in court to answer to murder charges, police continue to investigate the matter.
