Sonko breaks down in court

Former Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko  broke down in court as he tried to explain to the magistrate the frustrations he has experienced from the prosecution over the the graft case he is facing.

He appeared before Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti asked him to relax and stop crying as he spoke since he was writing his concerns.

Sonko told the court that even though he is always emotiona, it was difficult for him to fight back his tears at that time.

According to him, the police overwhelmed him with more charges after he refused to withdraw an affidavit that negatively mentions President Uhuru Kenyatta's sister Christine Pratt Kenyatta.

"The officers asked me to withdraw an affidavit I had filed at the high court against the president's sister. When I refused, they pressed against me assault charges. I think this is very important for the court to note," said Sonko as he sat down.

The former governor also said that he was frustrated by the court's move to deny him bail after his arraignment on Tuesday. He was also charged with several counts including assault and destruction of property.

On Monday, he appeared at the DCI to record
his statement regarding his confession and allegations against Interior PS Karanja Kibicho, claiming that they stage-managed the ODM chaos witnessed after the 2017 General Election.

Sonko's legal team led by Senior Counsel John Khaminwa urged the court to grant them 30 days to organise themselves.

According to Khaminwa, previous lawyers who were representing Sonko opted out.

However, the Director of Public Prosecutions opposed the request for more time, arguing that legal team only needs seven days.

Dr Khaminwa asked the court to direct that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission hand over to him all other records of the case, urging the court to grant him time to instruct new lawyers who will handle the graft case.
