President Macky Sall endorsed for AU Chair


The Economic Community of West African States ( ECOWAS) has nominated Senegalese President Macky Sall to take over as African Union Chairperson from 2022-2023.


The decision was arrived at an extraordinary summit held on February 2nd virtually.


While reacting to the endorsement, President Sall hailed the economic bloc for endorsing him.

" I  welcome the conclusions of the extraordinary summit of the ECOWAS of this day. Senegal was endorsed as the sole candidate to occupy the post of current President of the African Union reserved for the ECOWAS West African sub-region for the period 2022-2023,” Sall tweeted.


Democratic Republic of Congo's Felix Tshisekedi is the incoming AU Chair and his tenure will run until next year February when Sall will succeed him.


The AU Chair position rotates among member states .
