Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has stated that comedian Eric Omondi lied when he said he was in talks with the government to replace British supermodel Naomi Campbell as Magical Kenya International Tourism Ambassador.
Speaking to a local daily, Balala stated that the only thing he knows is that Eric, through email, requested a meeting with him. However, the government is not already in talks with him as he claimed.
Balala said, “Yes I have seen an email he sent to my office requesting for a meeting but he did not specify what the meeting was about. I receive hundreds of emails from people requesting to be Tourism Ambassadors.”
Eric made the claims a week ago on Radio Maisha’s Konnect Show where he appeared as a guest.
The Tourism CS appointed British supermodel Naomi Campbell as the Magical Kenya International Tourism Ambassador last month.
He argued that the appointment is a strategy for strengthening the domestic market and it is not meant to take away anything from it.
However, the appointment instigated controversy among Kenyans as some expected the role to be played by a Kenyan.
The CS defended the ministry's decision by arguing that they target specific markets when they make appointments.
