Lady Justice Martha Koome and Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia are among 13 applicants for the position of Chief Justice.
The Judicial Service Commission on Wednesday said that shortlisting of the applicants will be done within a fortnight.
"Following the declaration of vacancy for the position of Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya on January 18, 2021 via Gazette Notice No. 386, and the position of Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya on February 21, 2020 via Gazette Notice No. 1606, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) advertised the positions of the Chief Justice and the Judge of the Supreme Court on January 20, 2021,” JSC Secretary Anne Amadi said in a statement.
The application for the Chief Justice post was closed on February 9th, 2021 at 5:00 P.M.
The other applicants are Justice William Ouko, Justice D.K Marete, Alice Jepkoech Yano, Justice Mathew N Nderi, Senior Counsel Philip Murgor, Prof Patricia K. Mbote, Said Juma, Otondi Ontweka, Prof Otinga Mare, Dr Moni Wekesa and Ombongi Brian.
The position of the Chief Justice fell vacant on January 18th , 2021 following the retirement of David Maraga.
The CJ is tasked with heading the judiciary, acting as a link between the judiciary and the other arms of government, chairing the Judicial Service Commission and presiding over Supreme Court .
