British lawyer Karim Khan has been elected the new Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Khan will be replacing Gambian Fatou Bensouda whose term ends in June 2021.
Mr Khan garnered 72 votes in the second round of voting beating Irishman Fergal Gaynor who had 42 votes.
123 out of the 124 member states took part in the voting that saw Khan win 59 votes in the first round but they were insufficient.
He becomes the first European prosecutor for the ICC.
Khan is remembered in Kenya for representing Deputy President William Ruto and Former Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura in the ICC when they were facing charges of crime against humanity in relations to 2007-2008 Post Election Violence.
Khan's challenger Gaynor on the other hand was representing PEV victims.
Mr Khan who is currently the head of UN Investigative Team to Promote Accountability Accountability Crimes Committed by Da'esh/ISIL will serve for 9 years.
