Hundreds of teachers exit KUPPET over fraud and malpractice cases

Over 600 teachers have terminated their membership with the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) citing malpractice and fraud.

According to the teachers, the recent elections also had irregularities and illegalities.

They formed a new union titled the Kenya Union of Teachers and Trainers (KUTT), led by Andrew Shiloko who is one of the teachers. Shiloko appealed KUPPET members to leave the union and join the new one.

Shiloko said, "It was evident that the elections were rigged and we received reports of bribery. As longtime members of the union we are in pain because KUPPET is receiving our money and we are not getting the services we require."

The teachers added that they would write to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Public Service Commission (PSC) to cease their monthly contributions to KUPPET. The union has more than 110,000 teachers who are on the TSC payroll.

KUPPET has been at loggerheads with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), over membership of teachers.

KNUT's membership has reduced from 136,000 members to 28,000 members because of its wrangles with TSC over reduced pay cuts. Consequently, the union has shut down its branches across the country.

According to past reports, 200,000 teachers exited KNUT and moved to KUPPET due to the union's wrangles. However, KUPPET has dismissed claims over poaching teachers from its counterpart KNUT.

KUPPET'S national chairman Omboko Milemba insisted that the teachers who are said to have KNUT's membership ought to be investigated by
the relevant authorities.

He said, "We want the government to locate the missing teachers from KNUT. We cannot and won't accept them because if we do, we will be changing KUPPET to KNUT."
