Touadéra re-elected as Central African President

The President of the Central African Republic, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, has been re-elected after winning with a scoop of about 54% of the votes.

According to the electoral commission, a second-round runoff was made unnecessary by the clear results that showed a landslide win.

Former Prime Minister, Anicet George Pologuele, finished a distant second with just 21% of the votes, while Martin Ziguele finished third with 7% of the votes.

There were three female candidates among the 16 candidates who ran for presidency.

However, opposition candidates claim that there were massive irregularities in the election.

The government has accused the former President François Bozizé of staging an attempted coup. Mr Bozizé was barred from standing in the poll.

Prosecutors have launched an investigation, accusing Mr Bozizé of acts of destabilisation and rebellion.

A coalition of armed rebel groups cast an offensive which left thousands unable to cast their ballots. Nevertheless, the vote took place.
