The National Police Service announced that police will undertake a major operation to map out hot spots of lawlessness in the boda boda industry and weed out culprits.
In a statement on Thursday, January 28, Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai announced the move, putting boda boda riders on notice in response to a surge in cases of impunity and lawlessness associated with them.
The statement read in part, “All police officers have been directed to be on the lookout to take the necessary lawful action against any boda boda rider found to be taking the law into their own hands.”
According to Mutyambai, recent incidents that have seen individuals in accidents involving boda boda riders assaulted or in some cases their vehicles burnt are causes for alarm.
He urged members of the public to report any security-related incidents or accidents involving boda boda riders to the nearest police station.
The IG also urged boda boda riders and operators to address issues in a civilized manner rather than resort to lawlessness.
“Boda boda riders must adhere to all traffic regulations, and all laws of public order and decency, failure to which they will be dealt with in accordance with the law, individually,” Mutyambai asserted.
He noted that public safety and security face a great risk due to the emerging culture of lawlessness among the riders.
