The government has prohibited the consumption of fish from Lake Nakuru.
Confirming the ban, Agriculture Chief Administrative Secretary Linah Jebii Kilimo said the decision was taken after a research conducted by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute( KEMFRI) indicated that there was presence of heavy metals that may be poisonous if consumed.
KEMFRI conducted the research after residents complained of skin diseases after swimming in the lake and that fish harvested from the lake were rotting after 3 hours.
"Fish from Lake Nakuru is rotting after three hours, this could mean it is not safe for human consumption,"said Jebii Kilimo.
The CAS who was speaking after restocking exercise at Lake Naivasha attributed the poisoning to pollution calling on the Nakuru County government to halt fishing activities and
Work on correcting the situation.
"I want to ask the county government of Nakuru to check into the fishing that we understand is taking place in Lake Nakuru, " added the CAS
