PSVs design tricks to maximize during festive rush

Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) have designed ingenious tricks to maximize on profits during the festive season as Kenyans are on a rush to travel upcountry and preferred holiday destinations.

With the Ministry of Health's directive for PSVs to carrying only 50 percent of their capacity to help curb the spread of Covid-19, buses and matatus have modified their vehicles to increase their capacity.

Their profit maximization strategy is through the replacement of the normal vehicle seats by  smaller ones to create room for more passengers while appearing to comply with social distancing measures.

Some private vans have also been transformed into PSVs for the operators to evade the Covid-19 PSV rules and guidelines that the government imposed on them.

However, some operators on night travel are still not adhering to the 10 p.m to 4 a.m dusk till dawn curfew. The latter is only enforced in major cities.

According to the transport operators, they can buy their way into their destinations across the country despite police checks along the way as long as they are able to leave Nairobi before 10 p.m.

Anyone found on the road between 10 p.m and 4 a.m and is not part of the essential services risks an arrest as per the curfew rules.

The Standard Guage Railway (SGR) from Nairobi to Mombasa fully booked till Sunday, December 27 due to the high demand for travel. Kenyans are on a rush to get to the coastal city.

However, PSVs are lamenting of double standards with airlines and the SGR operating at full capacity without social distancing rules.
