Kibera yoga coach Dickens Omondi Odhiambo has bagged this year's Courageous Use of Sport Award.
Dickens was recognized for his role in the Africa Yoga Project and he was of one of the five winners of the annual award.
The award which is part of the Beyond Sport Global Awards is granted to individuals who have shown dedication and courage in using sport to improve their communities and who stand up against injustice and discrimination.
2020 marks the Beyond Sport Global Awards' 12th year in celebrating, supporting, and raising awareness by providing funding for sports ventures.
The award is also a part of the implementation huhof the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) a reality.
Raised in Kibra slum, Nairobi, Dickens was forced to join his mother to hawk on the streets such that had little time to rest, play, and study in his childhood.
He recalled, “I did not have time to play as a kid, I would leave school, drop my bag and rush to town to sell groundnuts and be back home at 10pm. I did not get a chance to be a child. I feel like I was exposed to adulthood so early."
Dickens positive attitude and passion paved the way for him, getting him enrolled at the Africa Yoga Project in which he constantly reminds yoga students to enjoy the noble practice with a smile.
