Google has paid tribute to Sudan, the world’s last surviving male northern white rhino who died two years ago.

The firm’s homepage reads "Remembering Sudan, the Last Male Northern White Rhino" and the words are accompanied by a beautiful illustration of Sudan.

According to Google, Sudan was an affectionate “gentle giant.” The rhino died in 2018 at the age of 45 which is equivalent to 90 human years.

Four northern white rhino's including Sudan were moved to Ol Pejeta Conservancy on this day in 2009.

Sudan is cherished for being a reminder of the danger of extinction faced by so many species. It brings significance to rhino conservation efforts.

The male northern white rhino died and left his daughter and granddaughter as the last two females of the subspecies alive in the world.

Currently, there is a scientific effort geared towards developing new reproductive technology in hopes of saving charismatic animals.

Sudan was born in in 1973 in Shambe which is currently South Sudan.
