Kenyan musician Kevin Kioko aka Bahati has filed a lawsuit against fellow musician Peter Blessing aka Peter Mwanyalo over Sh2 million label fraud.
Bahati and his manager Lawrence Munyao aka Weezdom were present as witnesses during the trial case that began on Tuesday December 1st, at Milimani Court.
The musician accused Peter Blessing
of using false pretenses to con him Sh 2million after leaving EMB record label.
Testifying against Blessing, Bahati told senior principal magistrate Benard Ochoi that in July 2019 Blessing knelt in front of his car requesting him to help him boost his music career.
Bahati added that the musician had looked for him relentlessly for almost eight months.
He testified, "My workers told me that there was a young man who had been coming to my office for the last eight months to see me.”
State Counsel James Gachoka led Bahati in his evidence, allowing him to recount Blessing's acts of desperation.
According to the popular entertainer, Blessing signed a contract in 2019 to be nurtured musically by EMB records.
Blessing also promised to have all returns go to EMB records Studios but allegedly did not honor the promise.
"He knelt In front of my car and asked me to help him boost his music career. He told me he could sing and asked for my support. After which I would recoup my investments from his performances and music sales," Bahati told Magistrate Ochoi
Bahati further told the court that he used to pay Blessing's rent of Sh4,000 and buy his clothes and food when artist was still struggling.
The celebrated musician owns the EMB record label under which he said he had signed Blessing who took off and started attending shows without his consent .
Bahati stated, "He has been earning through performances and getting other benefits from the music we recorded for him without our knowledge, this has caused us losses because we are yet to recover our expenditures on him."
Bahati's manager Weezdom also testified that EMB studios records used Sh2,039,000 on Blessing hoping the money would be recovered when Blessing established his own brand. However, the fast rising artist left unceremoniously.
According to Weezdom, the label had no knowledge about Blessing's exit but learned from the blogs that he has become an independent artist.
The case will be heard on February 24, 2021.
