Uganda protests: 37 dead in protest over Bobi Wine's arrest

The death toll in Uganda unrest has risen to 37 as protests continue over the arrest of Ugandan presidential hopeful and opposition leader, Bobi Wine.

The unrest has been termed as the worst in the country.

According to the Ugandan police pathologist and the head of police health services in Kampala, by Thursday morning 37 people had lost their lives in the protests.

Wine was arrested on Wednesday and charged with flouting COVID-19 guidelines that require presidential candidates to address less than 200 people. He was expected to appear in court on Friday .

His arrest instigated protests in which several people were injured and others died. According to police, 350 people were arrested and detained in connection with the widespread protest.

The heavy military and police presence in the capital has caused too much tension as Bobi Wine’s followers demanded his release.

Wine has been consistent with his call for President Yoweri Museveni to retire such that he has gained popularity.

The opposition presidential hopeful has also been arrested many times in recent years and at one time charged with treason.

Security Minister Gen. Elly Tumwine told journalists that protesters will be dealt with if they continue with their actions.

” This was a deliberate and pre-planned move to cause chaos because we have evidence. But I want to warn those inciting violence that they will reap what they sow,” Tumwine asserted.
