Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka has ruled that senators can wear traditional attire in parliament.
The speaker's ruling follows Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina's plenary sitting attendance on Tuesday dressed in Maasai regalia.
According to the standing orders, male members should wear a suit and tie and Muslims can attend sessions in kanzus.
Senator Ole Kina's regalia amused other senators who sought the speaker's direction on the matter.
Wajir Senator Abdulallahi Ibrahim said, "Mr Speaker, Senator Ledama is wearing what looks like Maasai regalia. Is he in order because we can also come with all kinds of attire."
Lusaka responded by saying that the Senate represents counties and each has its own traditional attire. He cited the Constitution which recognizes culture.
"We all know that we represent our counties and every county has their own cultural dressing. Narok and Kajiado have their cultural dressing which is recognised world over. So, it will be unfortunate for me to order him out of the house," Lusaka explained.
