Nine confirmed dead in ghastly road accident in Kilifi

Nine people died on Sunday November 1 in a head-on collision between a 14-seater matatu and a lorry in Kilifi County.

According to Kilifi Police Commander Stephen Matu, the ghastly accident occurred along Kaloleni-Mazeras highway in Bondora, Kilifi County.

The matatu was completely dismantled as its seats were scattered across the road.

Witnesses went to the scene to see if there were any survivors but it was also evident that no matatu passenger survived in the wreckage.

The cause of the accident is still unclear.

In the recent past weeks, there have been concerns by the government and other stakeholders over rise in road accidents.

The increased number of road accidents has been noted since President Uhuru Kenyatta reduced curfew hours and opened bars.

During the launch of National Safe Roads Programme, CS Fred Matiang’i urged Kenyans to behave responsibly to mitigate the spike in road accidents.

He said, "Time is here for us to be honest with one another... this is going to involve all of us, let us take part in behavioural change campaign.

The CS added, "Let us educate our people to behave responsibly. That is the only way we are going to deal with road accidents."
