Gov't to set up unemployment relief fund

The national government’s plans to set up an unemployment relief fund to cushion workers who lose their jobs.

According to Labour CS Simon Chelugui, the relief fund will be part of the recovery plan from the adverse Covid-19 effects.

Speaking during the employers’ annual virtual conference, the CS acknowledged that Covid-19 guidelines have caused unintended job  losses.

He added that the government will conduct an impact assessment on the Covid-19 pandemic effect on migrant workers.

Chelugui said, “Millions of employers and employees are already suffering immediate losses in terms of income and employment. This pandemic has affected not only the health of the workers, but also the number of jobs available.”

The pandemic has led to significant losses in many businesses, small and large, globally.
In Kenya, the informal sector which comprises of hotels, restaurants, retail and wholesale trade, employs 59.9 per cent of workers has experienced massive job losses.

The CS also recognized that personal and social care services such as the transport sector, barber shops, and salons have been largely affected.

He urged businesses to develop strategic frameworks to help them bounce back from external shocks such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

“For this reason, businesses need to adapt to changes as fast as they happen and ensure their preparedness for future pandemics or crises to ensure business continuity,” Chelugui advised
