American poet Louise Gluck has won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Literature for her " unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty make existence universal."
The 77-year-old is the first American to win the prestigious award since Bob Dylan was honoured in 2016.
Gluck who is a professor of English at Yale University made her debut in 1968 with " Firstborn, " and won the Pulitzer award in 1993 and the National book award in 2004.
The Swedish Academy Permanent Secretary Mats Malm during the ceremony in Stockholm on Thursday said he had spoken to Gluck just before making the announcement.
" The message came as a surprise, but a welcome one as far as I could tell, " he said.
Gluck poetry focuses on the painful relations of humans dealing with her themes ranging from death , childhood and family life.
She takes her inspiration from Greek mythology and it's characters such as Persephone and Eurydice who are victims of betrayal.
The Nobel Prize in Literature is given to an individual who has produced the most outstanding work in a perfect course.
