Elgeyo Marakwet County Government closes offices amid Covid-19 fears

March 23, 2021 0
Elgeyo Marakwet County Government has shut down its offices to the public due to the increase in the spread of coronavirus.

On Monday, County Secretary Paul Chemmuttut released a circular stating that all services that the county provides will be halted for an unspecified period.

Chemmuttut said, “Due to the recent surge in Covid-19 spread, it is hereby notified to the general public that there shall be total lockdown of County offices effective March 22,2021.”

According to him, the decision came about from the observation that locals were crowding the Public Works, Treasury and Procurement departments thereby exposing themselves and county staff to great risk of spreading or contracting the disease.

Reportedly, some Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and staff who had travelled outside the county showed flu-like symptoms.

County Assembly Speaker Philemon Sabulei pointed out that the lockdown was a cautionary measure even though none of the MCAs or staff members had been tested and confirmed positive.

“At the moment, the assembly is a no-go zone, and we are fumigating the place. It will be opened early next month. We did not want to take any chances,” said Sabulei.

Therefore, residents have been urged to seek alternative channels of communication to receive services while elderly staff will be working from home.

Elgeyo Marakwet County is the first to shut down services amid a growing third wave of Covid-19 infections. Reportedly, most counties are ill-equipped to handle Covid-19 patients.

Nairobi and Mombasa lead all the 47 counties in the number of reported cases of the coronavirus.

February 22, 2021 0
Three police officers were arrested during the weekend for causing the death of a woman who was a chang'aa brewer in Elgeyo Marakwet county.

The three are charged with raiding the woman's chang'aa den trying to arrest her.

Gladys Jebet Kiptoo, who was fleeing her home, drowned in a river on April 30, 2020.

According to officials, the case is unique and it should serve as a warning to the law enforcement agencies.

The local police opened an inquest and collected witness statements which they forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for action.

On February 3, 2021, the ODPP recommended that constables Nelson Kemboi, Kennedy Bii and Eric Magoma be charged with manslaughter contrary to section 202 as read with section 205 of the penal code.

The three officers await arraignment as they are under arrest.

According to Section 213 of the Penal Code, Laws of Kenya, a person is deemed to have caused the death of another person if by actual or threatened violence he causes that person to perform an act and which causes the death of such person.

Commonly, in public places people are injured or at times die whenever law enforcement agencies raid in an operation.
