President Uhuru Kenyatta has nominated former Judges and Magistrate Board Vice-Chairperson, Roseline Odhiambo Odede to chair the Kenya National Human Rights Commission( KNHRC).
The Head of State also nominated Prof. Marion Mutugi Wanjiku, Dr. Raymond Plal Sang Nyeris, Ms. Sarah Talaso Bonaya and Dr. Dennis Nyongesa Wamalwa to be members of the human rights body.
Uhuru asked the National Assembly to expedite the approval hearing in a message delivered to the House by National Assembly Deputy Speaker Moses Cheboi during a special sitting on Wednesday.
"In the Message, H.E. The President conveys that, in exercise of powers conferred on him by Article 250(2)(b) of the Constitution, in accordance to the procedure set out in section 11(3) of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act (Act No. 14 of 2011), as read together with sections 3 and 5 of the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, 2011
"He nominates the following persons for appointment to the Offices of Chairperson and Member of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, respectively” reads a Wednesday message by the President to Parliament.
“Honourable Members, H.E. The President therefore seeks the approval of this House of the nominees for appointment to the aforementioned state offices.”
Odede, an advocate of the High Court was among the candidates interviewed to take up commissioners roles at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in July.
The Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs in parliament is expected to hold hearings for approval of the five and submit its report to the House before Tuesday, 15th February, 2022.
The House will then consider the proposed appointment by Tuesday, February 22, 2022.
