Kenya has confirmed the first three cases of Covid-19 Omicron variant among travelers arriving from South Africa, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said on Wednesday.
" We have detected the Omicron variant particularly among travelers [at] the airports and so it's just a matter of time before it becomes dominant worldwide," said the Health CS.
Mr. Kagwe who was speaking in Mombasa during a meeting with the Council of Governors said a South African and two Kenyans who tested positive are currently in quarantine.
According to the World Health Organization( WHO) Omicron variant has been detected in at least 63 countries around the world.
It was first detected in samples in Southern Africa, but has since also been detected across Europe.
The health body says the Omicron variant appears to have a “growth advantage” over the Delta variant, which was previously the fastest spreading “variant of concern” of the virus.
