Pope Francis picks Archbishop Philip Anyolo to head Nairobi Archdiocese

The Archbishop of The Catholic Diocese of Kisumu Rev. Philip Anyolo has been appointed by Pope Francis as the Archbishop of The Catholic Diocese of Nairobi. 

John Cardinal Njue, who served in the position since 2007, retired in January this year. 

The Kenya Catholic Media Network stated that the Archbishop's appointment was first announced in the Thursday's edition of  L’Osservatore Romano, Vatican City State’s daily newspaper. 

The Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya and South Sudan, Archbishop Bert Van Megen, also sent an official communication to the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) regarding Rev. Anyolo’s appointment.  

The appointed Archbishop served as KCCB chairman from October 2013 to May 2021.  

After Cardinal Njue's retirement in January, Nairobi Auxiliary Bishop David Kamau stepped in  as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Nairobi. 

Rev. Anyolo was ordained a priest for the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret in 1983 and on December 6, 1995, Pope John Paul II appointed him  to serve as Bishop of Kericho. On February 3, 1996, he was consecrated as Bishop of Kericho

Father John Paul II appointed him as Apostolic Administrator of Homa Bay on February 20, 2002, after Rt. Rev. Linus Okok Okwach resigned from the post. 

Rev. Anyolo was installed as Bishop of Homabay on May 23, 2003, and as the Archbishop of Kisumu on January 16, 2019.
