Petroleum CS fined 500k for failing to appear before National Assembly committee

The National Assembly Committee on Finance and National Planning has slapped Petroleum Cabinet Secretary John Munyes with Sh 500,000 fine  for failing to appear before the committee to answer queries over the rise in fuel prices.

Munyes had written to the committee indicating that he was in South Sudan on official duty.

The Gladys wanga led committee said the failure by the CS to appear before shows that he is uncooperative.

Last week on Tuesday, the Finance Committee which is leading the probe into high fuel prices in the country was granted an additional  seven days to investigate fuel costings formula.

The committee has so far summoned officials from Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), National Treasury and the Ministry of Petroleum.

The probe by the Committee arose after several citizens petitioned Parliament seeking to have  Value-added tax (VAT)on fuel products vacated as a means of bringing relief to Kenyans.

On September 14 fuel prices hit a record high of ksh 135 for petrol on average across the country.
