Journalists Ressa and Muratov win Nobel Peace Prize

Journalists Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov have won the Nobel Peace Prize for their fights to defend freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia respectively.

"The Norwegian Nobel committee called the pair "representatives of all journalists who stand up for this ideal".

The winners of the prestigious prize, worth 10m Swedish krona (£836,000; $1.1m), were announced at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.

Ressa is the co-founder of investigative digital media firm Rapple which has focused on the war on drugs waged by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.


Muratov the founder and editor in chief of Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta has constantly highlighted President Vladimir Putin's increasingly authoritarian rule.


The Noble committee while announcing the pair said it had recognized their efforts " to safeguard freedom of speech which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace."
