Africa has retained the top spot in this year's world air cargo performance rankings, having a 33.9% growth in August as the global airline industry continues on its recovery from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released global air cargo market data for August 2021 which indicates strong overall growth with demand up 7.7 percent, above the long-term average growth trend of 4.7 percent.
In August, the growth in Africa’s international cargo volumes was the largest increase globally at 33.9% with the Africa-Asia route having strong investment flows.
Latin America had the weakest performance globally as its airlines suffered a 14 percent slump in international cargo volumes in August compared to 2019. Moreover, there was a huge reduction in capacity with international capacity decrease 27.1 in the period.
For several years, Africa has outperformed the rest of world in air cargo market operations despite accounting for only a two percent share of the market.
In the rankings North America came second to Africa with an 18% increase. Middle East was third with a 15.4% increase, Europe fourth with a 6% increase and Asia was fifth with a 3% increase.
