South Africa's former President Jacob Zuma who was jailed in July for contempt of court has been granted medical parole, the correctional center said on Sunday.
The 79-year-old is serving a 15-month sentence at Escourt Correctional Center.
The nature of his illness was not disclosed but a statement from the correctional department said he will continue to serve his sentence in the community under supervision.
" Medical parole placement for Mr. Zuma means that he will complete the remainder of the sentence in the system of the community correctional, " the center said
Last Month, Mr. Zuma underwent surgery with the correctional department noting that he was awaiting further operations.
Zuma was jailed for defying a constitutional court order to give evidence at an inquiry investigating high-level corruption during his 10-year tenure
