A man, identified as BKM, in Nairobi has been sentenced to three years in prison for killing his two-year-old daughter by mistake due to his mental illness.
According to the court documents , the man who was off his medication when he arrived home took a knife and stabbed his daughter who he found sleeping in bed with her mother.
Reportedly, BKM murdered the girl on October 15, 2018, at Utawala Estate in Nairobi. He stabbed her in the chest and abdomen.
BKM's failure to take his prescriptive medicine instigated hallucinations that led him to kill his daughter, identified as SKM, the testimony provided indicated so.
In her ruling, Justice Jessie Lesiit stated, “I find that the accused was the author of his mental problems for deliberately failing to take medication as required. What he did to his daughter is a direct consequence of his action to stop the medication.”
The judge noted that the BKM needs to stay in jail and understand the full consequences of his actions thereby declining to give the suspect a non-custodial sentence.
BKM pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter after admitting to the offense.
