Man charged with M-PESA fraud

A man believed to have defrauded an M-PESA agent of Sh42,170 has been arraigned in court after escaping a lynch mob in Kilimani, Nairobi.

Allegedly, Kennedy Maina defrauded the attendant of the money along Kindaruma road in Kilimani on July 13, 202 by posing as a Safaricom employee.

Maina claimed the shop was operating illegally because it was not properly registered.

After the shop attendant's neighbors discovered that he had lured her into sending the money to  co-conspirators who also claimed to be Safaricom staffers, a mob justice nearly killed the suspect.

The attendant borrowed the money from traders in the neighbourhood and sent it to Maina’s accomplices before they realized the fraud.

Maina found himself on the losing end as the money was sent to his accomplices who were using him and he did not benefit from the fraud.

He was then arrested alone as he could not help the police trace them.

Together with his accomplices, Maina demanded Sh250,000 from the company, threatening to deregister and close the shop whereby the money deposited as operational capital would be lost if she failed to comply.

The man however denied the charges before senior principal magistrate Derrick Kutto of Kibera law courts and was freed on a Sh50,000 bond and an alternative cash bail of Sh70,000.
